Productivity Assessments

CHALLENGE

Fleet is a Canadian Aerospace manufacturer for commercial, military and civil programs. Housed in a 500,000-square-foot facility, Fleet produces detailed parts for complex assemblies made from aerospace metals & advanced composites. The company enlisted the College’s Research & Innovation team to provide a full assessment of the Chinook Helicopter assembly area, focusing on productivity and quality improvement. The assessment took into consideration the general facility layout, in addition to the process flow, quality standards & performance, and employee engagement.

SOLUTION

The research team identified four areas for improvement, including: 1. Reducing scrap rate with a Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA); 2. Implementing a system for Business Plan Deployment (BPD), which includes metrics to track safety, people, quality, productivity and cost; 3. Developing a Process Flow chart with a Value Stream map and 4. Engaging in the development of documented Standardized Work Instructions with visual aids for the team members.
