This month, we hear from Brock Husak, Advanced Manufacturing Scientist, Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre.

Brock Husak is no stranger to the Research and Innovation division at Niagara College. Throughout his student years, and into his early career, Brock built up his resume earning advanced manufacturing skills with the Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (WAMIC).

A 2019 graduate of Niagara College’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program, Brock did his co-op with WAMIC in 2017, followed by a contract as Research Associate (graduate) until September 2020, when he worked as both a Laboratory Technician, and the Laboratory Technologist with WAMIC, off and on until 2023. In between, he gained industry experience as the Manufacturing Technician with GS Machine and Tool in St. Anne’s, Ont.

More recently, Brock worked as a Manufacturing Project Engineer, and as a Paint/Prep Supervisor, both for Airbus Helicopters Canada before returning to WAMIC’s skilled team. In his current role as Advanced Manufacturing Scientist, he leads applied research projects and supports the technical services team.

In this article, Brock shares his perspective “From the Client’s Side.”

In the ever-evolving world of manufacturing, the ability to deliver on time, with quality, and at cost is paramount. This trifecta, often referred to as the “Iron Triangle,” is the cornerstone of a successful manufacturer. However, the weight of the Iron Triangle can sometimes feel like a burden, as manufacturers strive to meet all its criteria simultaneously. Understanding the importance of each side of the triangle and how they interact is crucial for achieving success in the manufacturing industry.

Challenges Manufacturers face

Manufacturers are constantly under pressure to deliver their products efficiently.

Any time not spent on the product is considered wasted. This is why manufacturers often overlook inefficiencies that are not critical. They may not be able to afford the cost of certain solutions, lack the time to implement them, or simply do not have the necessary knowledge base. Additionally, the risk of potential failure can be a significant deterrent. As a result, manufacturers often work around inefficiencies and problems instead of addressing them directly.

Common inefficiencies in the manufacturing process include reworking parts, improving quality, and managing the start of production and final delivery. These inefficiencies can lead to wasted time, increased costs, and reduced product quality. However, with the right support, manufacturers can overcome these challenges and achieve greater efficiency and success.

How WAMIC can help

WAMIC plays a vital role in helping local industries and manufacturers overcome these hurdles.

By engaging with industry partners and keeping the Iron Triangle in mind, WAMIC helps smooth the path through production. Manufacturers often know where their hurdles are but need assistance to overcome them. This is where WAMIC can provide significant value.

WAMIC can help reduce or eliminate the hurdles that waste time, affect quality, and drive up costs. By working closely with manufacturers, WAMIC can identify inefficiencies and provide solutions that lead to a smoother production process. This collaboration can result in improved product quality, reduced costs, and increased efficiency.

Engaging with WAMIC

For WAMIC, working with mature manufacturing companies is different from engaging with startups or creating proof-of-concept projects.

Industry partners mature quickly and require reliability. When engaging with industry, WAMIC considers the following points:

  1. Short- to Medium-Term Project Timelines: Industry projects tend to move quickly, and long-term projects may not provide as much value. WAMIC focuses on short- to medium-term timelines, ensuring that projects remain relevant and impactful.
  2. Keep It Simple: Simplicity is key when working with industry partners. Keeping projects simple lowers training costs and reduces the learning curve for partners.
  3. Listen to Their Ultimate Needs: Understanding the ultimate needs of industry partners is crucial for adding value to the project. WAMIC uses clear communication and active listening to help ensure that the project meets the partner’s needs.
  4. Availability: Being available during and after a project is essential for building trust, mitigating risk, and eliminating downtime. WAMIC supports our partners post-project to ensure they get the most out of the project.
  5. Leverage Funding: Utilizing available funding and leveraging WAMIC’s resources can reduce the financial burden on industry partners. This can make it easier for them to invest in solutions that improve efficiency and quality.

The collaboration between WAMIC and industry partners is essential for overcoming the challenges faced by manufacturers. By understanding the importance of the Iron Triangle and addressing inefficiencies, WAMIC can help manufacturers achieve greater success. Engaging with WAMIC requires a focus on short- to medium-term project timelines, simplicity, clear communication, availability, and leveraging funding. With the right support, manufacturers can overcome hurdles, improve efficiency, and deliver high-quality products on time and within budget.
